Welcome to The Chicory Project, an evolving tapestry of community, culture, and conversation rooted in the heart of Baltimore.

Born from the legacy of the original Chicory Magazine, a vibrant voice of the city's marginalized communities from 1966 to 1983, The Chicory Project seeks to reignite and reimagine this powerful platform for a new generation.

We believe in the power of words and art to spark change, bridge divides, and illuminate the shared human experience.

As we embark on this journey, The Chicory Project invites you to join us in weaving a new narrative for Baltimore, one that honors its past, embraces its present, and imagines its future with hope, courage, and an unwavering belief in the power of community. Welcome to the conversation. Welcome to The Chicory Project.

Chicory magazine

In the heart of Baltimore, amidst the vibrant yet often challenging tapestry of urban life, Chicory Magazine emerged in 1966 as a beacon of expression and understanding. Founded to amplify the voices of the city's Black community, Chicory became more than a magazine; it was a platform for poetry, stories, and art that resonated with the lived experiences of those navigating life in Baltimore's inner city.

For seventeen transformative years, until its conclusion in 1983, Chicory served as a space where creativity and culture flourished against a backdrop of social and political upheaval.

Today, we stand at the threshold of a new era, embracing the spirit of Chicory with a vision that seeks to honor its past while boldly stepping into the future. The Chicory Project envisions a renaissance of this iconic magazine as part of a broader initiative that extends its foundational principles into the digital age and beyond.

Our mission is to reignite Chicory's legacy by launching a magazine reboot alongside a series of community-engaged projects that encompass art, education, and activism.
